Welcome to the Food Shocks Project, an initiative dedicated to addressing the critical challenges impacting global food systems. Our approach integrates scientific research, educational outreach, and practical extensions to strengthen food system resilience against various disruptions such as climatic anomalies, economic fluctuations, and geopolitical tensions. This project aims to advance scientific understanding and develop sustainable practices that ensure food security in the face of increasing global uncertainties. Join us in our comprehensive exploration of adaptive strategies that promote the sustainability of agricultural systems worldwide.

Meet the Food Shocks Project

Building resilience in food systems: The recent surge in global disruptions—from pandemics to climate shocks—has exposed critical vulnerabilities in our food systems. Our project, supported by the United States Department of Agriculture - National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), aims to address these challenges by enhancing the resilience of local and regional food systems.

By integrating cutting-edge research, innovative educational strategies, and practical extension efforts, we strive to create food systems that are not only sustainable but also resilient against a multitude of shocks.

Objectives

Our holistic strategy: Project objectives are designed to fortify food systems through:

  • Research: Investigate and quantify the impacts of food system shocks and develop strategies to mitigate these effects.
  • Education: Utilize findings to inform and update curricula across K-12 and higher education platforms, preparing the next generation to better manage and anticipate future food system challenges.
  • Extension: Disseminate practical, actionable strategies to stakeholders within the food system to enhance immediate and long-term resilience.

Each objective supports the project's overarching goal to ensure food and nutritional security, especially for under-served and vulnerable communities, amidst increasing global instability.
